A William IV/early Victorian rosewood crossbanded mahogany longcase clock, 36cm arched painted dial inscribed James Brindley, Newcastle, Roman numerals, rolling moon phase to arch, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture, 8-day movement striking on a bell, the case with lofty swan neck pediment, Gothic triple lancet door to waist flanked by turned pillars, plinth base, 231cm high, c.1840 James Brindley of Newcastle-under-Lyme was born in 1804 and apprenticed to John Nickerson of Newcastle 1819-1826, and set up shop in Ironmarket, Newcastle shortly afterwards, working until 1860. He employed seve men in 1851, and used neighbouring craftsman John Broomhall as his cabinet maker (and in all probability the maker of this case). He was succeeded by his son John Beavis Brindley.working 1830-1850
