Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778), by and after, Vedute Di Roma Disegnate Ed Incise Da Giambattista Piranesi Architetto Ve...iano, approximately eighty-nine plates from a series of etchings depicting views of Rome, mid-18th century
Provenance: John Somerville Beaumont (1890 - 1967), prominent architect of Manchester and later Sheffield. It is known that in 1911 he was appointed by the Gilchrist Trustees to the Gilchrist Studentship at the British School in Rome.
Here for the next two years his time was spent on Roman research and lecturing to the MSA on architecture of Imperial Rome, and one might conjecture that he acquired the volume at this time.
Acquired in 1965 by the present vendor's father Raymond Cowling, a partner in the firm, when taking over the practice. Thence by descent.
