The Brougham was a light, four-wheeled horse-drawn carriage popular during the nineteenth century and named after the politician and jurist Lord Brougham, who had a carriage built to his particular specifications by London coachbuilder Robinson & Cook in about 1838. The vehicle was to be enclosed, able to seat two passengers in luxury, with occasional seats for two more, plus a driver and a groom. It also had to be light and require just a single horse and have a full cut-under fore carriage to allow it to turn in its own length in the narrow streets of London’s business district. The design quickly became popular and was copied in Paris and in New York by bespoke coachbuilders. Variations included an extension-front Brougham, which had four full seats inside a longer body, square-front Broughams referencing the shape, and the bow-front Brougham
