Cadell 1802, small 4to, xx + 394, foldout map, engraved plate, three fold-out plans, original gilt embossed spine and marbled boards, re-backed and re-attached, Bookplate, Chesterfield House ensigned by Earl’s coronet
***Provenance: Chesterfield House, Curzon Street, London, was the town residence of the Stanhopes, Earls of Chesterfield, whose principal country seat was at Bretby, Derbyshire. It was designed by Isaac Ware, a leading follower of Lords Burlington and built 1747-52. The courtyard colonnade and marble staircase came from the Duke of Chandos’ house at Canons; the client was Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield, the statesman and man of letters who twice refused a dukedom. The family sold the house in 1869, and it was demolished and the site redeveloped in 1937 (1)
