A George II silver pair case pocket watch, by Joseph Foster, London, 4.5cm enamel dial with Roman and subsidiary numerals, verge fusee movement numbered 904, shagreen outer-case, 7.6cm over loop, London 1750
More Information
The watch has been untouched for many years and has lay undisturbed in a draw at Casterne Hall.
We have given the watch two winds and the chain gathers nicely on the verge; the watch does tick, but it is temperamental.
The dial is in good order.
The hands retain much of the original bluing.
The silver case snaps closed and holds nicely.
The watch glass is slightly loose allowing it to turn however remains secure.
The movement needs a good clean.
The back of the silver case has an indentation going around the entire body of the watch as is often seen with pair cases of this period.
The width of the dial is 42mm.
18mm from base plate to winder (please note that we have taken the highest point to be the top of the winder). If not taking into account the top of the winder the measurement is 16mm.
The external case is slightly misshapen however still holds on the clasp.
The front has two sections of shagreen missing, one 30mm in length, the other 14mm in length. I believe these pieces have been missing for the majority of the watches life.
The shagreen covering the back of the case is considerably bumpy, some of which is part of the original design, other parts misshapen through age.
