A French Belle Epoque Louis XVI Revival ormolu mounted white marble mantel clock, 9cm convex enamel dial signed Planchon/A Paris, Roman chapter outer Arabic minute chapter, twin winding holes, 14-day movement signed and numbered 01231 and striking on a bell, the case crested by a compressed covered urn, flanked by acanthus grasped and bud crested columns and applied with ribbon-tied branches, knop feet, 31cm high, c.1890 Mathieu Planchon was apprenticed to his father, worked later under Robert Houdin, and opened his atelier and shop at the Palais Royal in Paris in 1890. He was a fairly prolific maker of good quality ornamental clocks but also sold clocks cased by his firm using movements by other makers.
