The hall was built c. 1590 by Robert Smythson of Judge Sir Francis Rodes (d. 1588), whose son was created a baronet and whose line became extinct in 1743 (albeit with a surviving branch in the US), but the family continued through three female lines, retaining the name de Rodes until inherited by Godfrey Locker-Lampson, MP. Since his death the house has been a Catholic prep school
