He was taught what he called the ‘art-science’ of photography by Revd. Edwin Abney, a friend of W H Fox-Talbot; his earliest topographical photograph can be dated to autumn 1853. Samuel Rayner (1806-1879) was a Matlock Bath based artist and father of a dynasty of artists, who was a friend of George Cattermole and Octavius Oakley
